About « Broadside.

I’m Caitlin Kelly, a lifetime print journalist, writing for a living since college. A generalist,  my work runs the gamut from personal essays for The New York Times to business writing, sports, travel, design  — anything that challenges me.

Here at Broadside, I talk about everything — often about women, work, journalism, books, culture, family and relationships.

My new book, a memoir for Portfolio/Penguin, is about working retail in a suburban mall for more than two years. “Malled: My Unintentional Career in Retail” is funny, poignant and a detailed, unprecedented look into the nation’s third largest industry. It’s out April 14, 2011.

Entertainment Weekly called it “an excellent memoir” and it’s been featured in Marie-Claire, USA Today, People, Time.com, Fortune.com, Forbes.com, allure.com.

I also contributed a piece to the Harvard Business Review blog about the overlooked value of retail associates.

“Rollicking and riveting” , says biographer Meryl Gordon. “Kelly’s powerful descriptions of retail…highlight so much of what is wrong with our economy” said David Madland, Director of the American Worker Project at the Center for American Progress.

My 11 Reporting Tips from daily newspaper veterans appeared in the May 2010 issue of The Writer magazine. You’ll find much more about me, and samples of my newspaper and magazine writing, at this website. Here’s the site for my first bookBlown Away: American Women and Guns.”

I also coach fellow writers and edit their work; Please email me for my rates.
