Triumph Over Tragedy

Triumph Over Tragedy.

You are looking at a touching image with an incredible story. The picture shows a small child comforting and feeding a baby. Both are orphans, yet well cared for and loved. These children, while orphans, are not neglected or in need.

We often ask ourselves why bad things happen to good people. This is the story of just such a situation, and the amazing example of triumph occurring out of tragedy.

The incredible story begins in 1873, and centers around Horatio and Anna Spafford. The Spaffords were living comfortably in Chicago, when they decided to visit Europe. Horatio had some last minute business to attend to, so he sent his wife and children on. On the way to Europe, their ship, the S. S. Ville De Havre, was struck by another ship and was sunk. Horatio’s four children died in the accident. His wife was found floating on some wood, unconscious, but still alive. She arrived in Wales 9 days later, and sent a fateful telegraph to her husband, which read, “Saved Alone, What Shall I do?”.

Upon receiving the tragic news, Horatio immediately departed to join his wife. On the voyage across the ocean, the Ship Captain came to Horatio’s cabin, and notified him that they were now passing over the spot where his children had lost their lives. Receiving this solumn announcement, and while over the precise spot that the children drowned, Horatio took out a pen, and wrote the immortal Hymn, “It is Well with My Soul“.

If you are not familiar with this Hymn, we share the words to it below:

It is Well With My Soul

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say, It is well, it is well, with my soul.

It is well, with my soul, It is well, with my soul, It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, Let this blessed assurance control, That Christ has regarded my helpless estate, And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

It is well, with my soul, It is well, with my soul, It is well, it is well, with my soul.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought! My sin, not in part but the whole, Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

It is well, with my soul, It is well, with my soul, It is well, it is well, with my soul.

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight, The clouds be rolled back as a scroll; The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend, Even so, it is well with my soul.

It is well, with my soul, It is well, with my soul, It is well, it is well, with my soul.

The Hymn has been both a comfort and generation to men and women of faith for many generations. However, Horatio did not simply write the hymn, and then get back to his old life. Horatio and Anna decided to serve God in the Holy City of Jeruselam. This was before Israel was a Nation. Horatio stated that “Jerusalem is where my Lord lived, suffered and conquered and I wish to learn how to live, suffer and especially to conquer”. While in Jeruselam, they built the American Colony. They cared for the sick and ministered to the needs of the poor of the Holy City. They also set up the Anna Spafford Baby Home, an orphanage providing loving care for the children of the area. The image above was taken in 1925, and show the enduring legacy of the Spaffords. Their facility was still providing for children some 50 years after their tragic loss. It is a story of hope and triumph, and how one man was able to turn tragedy into triumph.

Keeping busy

I thought I had to work over the weekend, and was ready to do so. While I was out looking for headstones yesterday, trying to do that every weekend, I got a text that said I didn’t need to come in after all. Kinda bummed, like the extra money. :)

Yesterday I went to the Burlington Cemetery and the Otto Cemetery. I found the headstones of all five requests. Very cool. One of the requests I had had for a few weeks. I could not find the lady anywhere in the cemetery. The smaller cemeteries do not always have a directory and map, so I have TO WALK THE WHOLE CEMETERY. Which is cool I guess, since that is why I started, help someone and get more exercise. After I tried to find her the first time I called the caretaker of the cemetery. She knew the person many years ago. She also knew the headstone was there, I had just overlooked it somehow. I later looked up that cemetery and found an old database list online, put up at sometime by someone who was a caretaker. They listed every single burial in the cemetery. (There are lots of those old records online, found one yesterday for some people not listed on findagrave at all, yet I took about 6 pictures of headstones, found out ALL are related too, just cuz of the list). Anyway, on that old list, I found the lost relative, with a different last name, at this point, we already knew she had been married three times. But…on the list I found the relative, it referred you to yet ANOTHER name. :) Heheheh The fifth spouse, the last, that is the name used at the time of the burial. :) So, I found her. Guess what, she was the SECOND TO THE LAST headstone I searched. I walked through that whole cemetery and was beginning to despair of finding the person again. There it was. Wish I had known to start there at the beginning rather than end up there! Sheesh.

I took pictures of every single headstone in the Otto Cemetery. It is a beautiful and old cemetery. Pioneers are buried there, they have a special tiny plaque on their headstones.

Here is a close-up (crop) of the little plaque:

Isn’t that something??  I don’t know who, or what, organization makes the decision a marker can have the plaque, but I think it is a WONDERFUL idea.

Very interesting. There were a few headstones I did not get shots of, the pine trees are so old and beautiful, with branches all the way down the trunks to the ground. There were some old ones underneath those branches, but I myself, being of the older persuasion, just could not get UNDER those branches, I tried, with a myriad of thoughts running through my brain. “Will I be able to get back up” being the most prominent. I could not bend down to see them properly, they were literally about 6 inches high, very small markers, and I am too old and fat for that now.

While there I also saw two HUGE JACKRABBITS!!! I have never seen one before. I was at the bottom of the small hill the cemetery sits on, happened to look up towards the top and see what I thought was a huge rabbit. It didn’t move. I thought maybe it is a rabbit headstone for a child. I thought that because I also thought it was too big to be a plain old little wabbit. About the time I am thinking, “if that thing were to come towards me, I’d run.”, it reared up on it HUMONGOUS legs, front paws in the air, like a horse rearing, and just stayed there for a sec. I almost crapped my pants. It took off. I was so dumbfounded I could not move fast enough to get a picture. A while later I saw another go streaking across the cemetery, I was unprepared once again. I had just looked up in time to see it take off. Never, ever in my life have I see one like that. I told my sister about it, seems she had a pair living in her fields. :( Never knew. It was terrific to see.

History in my family when a country was in the making….

I am getting ready to go to sleep, was up all night working.  I ended my day on a very good note.

I have been looking for more information about Matthew French and his family.  Pain in the butt.  However, I came across a document that I am going to post here.  A few pages from the document, there are lots more, consisting mostly of names, too many pages to post and upload here.  I did upload the first page, explaining the document, and then two other pages that list some important information taking place at the time.  A little context, a bunch of names won’t mean a whole heck of a lot!

A very interesting note on the upcoming page regarding some incidents by the Cherokee people, remember hearing in History how some fought with the English, here is an example.

And this one, the one that created a HUGE lump in my throat. Had tears in my eyes reading this declaration of loyalty to the birth of a new nation.  USA.

And on this page, the name of my GGGGGGG-Grandfather.  Lordy, that is a lot of G’s.  Just think, if they were not organizing and redoing records they may not have found these old roll calls and notes in the attic. Isn’t it amazing.

I know I was in the military, “serving” my country and all that, but this guy, with many others, ACTUALLY had to fight for something that started a new nation, and all that comes with it.   They dared to defy the “establishment” and sought to create a new reality for themselves.  It sure is something to see it in writing when it is someone from your own family, not just reading in the history books. I can’t even describe, accurately, how it made me feel.  No words.

Ending my day on a GREAT note, I think!

Night all!

P.S.  The pages I didn’t upload contain names and I still need to download more, only because I would like to have any and all notes that are contained within this document, not just my ancestor’s name. :)   I am not sure how many there are, though I did download more than what I have shown here.
