A Bay Area firefighter, single father and former Marine is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after being intentionally hit with a car following an early morning argument at a San Francisco fast food restaurant.

Twenty-nine-year old Albert Bartal was eating at a Richmond District Jack in the Box a little before 3am on Thanksgiving night when he got into a physical altercation with a still unidentified suspect. The two were separated by bystanders and Bartal quickly left for a nearby Shell station.

The other man also immediately exited the restaurant and got in a black, Mazda CX SUV. He followed Bartal to the gas station parking lot and rammed him with his car before fleeing the scene.

Bartal suffered traumatic brain injures as a result of the crash and was taken to San Francisco General Hospital.

“This is a horrible experience that no fireman or police officer would ever want to have to go through,” Justin Scheef , director of the San Mateo-Santa Cruz Chapter of the CDF Firefighter’s Union, told CBS San Francisco. “The nice thing is that everyone bands together during these times and it’s one brotherhood.”

Police have described the suspect as a mixed race or Latin male, 18-24 years old, with short black hair and a manicured beard. Once captured, the suspect will likely be charged with attempted murder and assault.

The victim is a San Francisco native who rose to the rank of sergeant during his four years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He is the single father of a two-year old and has spent the past five years as a seasonal firefighter at the Santa Clara County‘s Saratoga Summit Fire Station.

“Our main concern is his well-being and recovery,” Cal Fire Captain Jonathan Cox told the San Francisco Examiner, “and assisting SFPD in their ongoing investigation.”

The San Francisco Police Department has released this video of the suspect and are asking anyone with relevant information to call (415) 575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411.

China hospital disposes of live baby

China hospital disposes of live baby – Yahoo! News.

Health authorities in south China said Friday they were investigating a hospital medical team for mistakenly diagnosing a stillbirth and disposing of a baby that was alive.

The probe is taking place at the Nanhai Red Cross Hospital in the Guangdong provincial city of Foshan where the incident occurred on October 26, the Nanhai district health bureau said in a statement faxed to AFP.

According to the statement, Liu Dongmei — eight months pregnant — had been rushed to the hospital with internal bleeding and stomach cramps.

She later had an emergency birth, but the baby was neither breathing nor crying after leaving the womb and its skin had turned purple, it said.

Believing it was dead, the medical team disposed of the child but did not follow proper hospital procedures, the statement added.

The Foshan News, a local website, reported that when Liu’s sister-in-law asked to see the body around 30 minutes after birth, she was handed a yellow plastic bag containing the infant and found it was still alive.

“I opened the plastic bag and saw the baby’s hands and feet moving, the stomach was going up and down and air bubbles were coming out of his mouth,” the paper quoted her as saying.

She was further shocked when she saw the baby was a boy — not a girl as the family had been told, it said.

According to the Foshan News, nurses had told the family the child was a girl in an effort to blunt the blow of its death.

In China, baby boys are often viewed as more precious than girls, as many families can have only one child as part of the nation’s population policy and desire a male heir.

Following the discovery, the newborn was rushed to intensive care where he remains in a stable condition.

Officials at the hospital refused to comment on the incident when contacted by AFP.

China’s healthcare system — once widely praised for improving the health of millions — is now panned as costly, underfunded and providing shoddy treatment, especially in poorer regions.

Liu and her husband are seeking to sue the hospital for 300,000 yuan ($45,000), the Beijing News said.

The head of the maternity ward, a doctor and two nurses have been suspended pending the results of the investigation, it added.

Student shot on school grounds in North Carolina

Student shot on school grounds in North Carolina

(CNN) — A high school student in North Carolina was shot in the neck Monday outside her school, a spokeswoman for the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said.

The incident occurred about 1:30 p.m. on the grounds of Cape Fear High School, school officials and sheriff’s spokeswoman Debbie Tanna said. In addition to the high school, a nearby middle school, Mac Williams, was also put on lockdown after the shooting.

"We are unsure of the scenario," Tanna said. "This is a highly wooded area where people hunt, and that is a possibility, however, it was an awfully good shot."

The victim is believed to be 15 years old, Tanna said. She was in stable condition at a hospital, Cumberland County Schools spokeswoman Theresa Perry said.

"She walked out of the school cafeteria, and there was a loud pop, and she fell to the ground. That was it," said Tanna, who described the wound as "very serious."

More than an hour after the shooting, students were still being escorted out of one school by police. They walked in a single file line with their hands up as distraught parents and other students stood by and watched.

The school district was calling parents to notify them of the incident.

"We just want parents to know that their children are safe," Tanna said.
